playing with rocks and eating grits

This is going to be a fun semester; what could be better than playing with rock and eating grits?

I still have three science requirements to fill to complete my BA, thankfully I don't have to do anything crazy link Organic Chemistry. This semester I am taking Archaeology and Geology, which will fill two of my science requirements. In our first Geology lab, last Friday, we spent three hours trekking around the Old Man River Valley searching for specimens from different geological time periods. We trudged through the mud, labeled rocks, and measured the slope of some bedrock... it sure beat taking notes for three hours.

My other three courses are German (of course), Medieval History, and the History and Culture of the American South. The HCAS will be my first 4000 level history course at the U of L and I am really looking forward - particularly because of its format. The learning will be primarily student led; the lessons will be based upon a series of student presentations and required readings. Next week we are going to be looking at the food that characterizes the American South (among other things) and we are going to be samplin' some grits. Sounds like fun to me.
