men's curling gold

Brad Gushue's victory over the Fin's today was a big one in my books. It's too bad that the ladies had to settle for bronze, but they still played really well over the course of the Olympics. It is good to see that Canada is maintaining its position in one of its premier sports.

a bitter, bitter, sweet day

I just finished watching Canada get shut out by the Russians in the men's ice hockey quarter finals, and I feel like I have been kicked in the gut by a evil donkey. It is not just the loss, but magnitude of the Canadian loss. There were a few moment of life, and even a goal for the Canadians that came just after the referee had blown his whistle, but in the end the Russians were clearly the better team. There was only one player who really shone for the Canadians and that was Martin Brodeur.

The worst thing about this loss is that it will, likely, overshadow Canada's best day at the 2006 Winter Olympics. Our team has already won four medals today, including two golds. This is incredible day in so many respects, but this is not a great day. Canada has done well on many fronts, but there is one medal that shines more in my eyes than all the rest - men's hockey gold - and that dream is no more.

a little bit of r & r

It was great to get away for the weekend. We were able to do a little bit of skiing at Lake Louise with our friends Rob & April in the second picture), with Wieda and Thomas, and with Dave and Gina. I must say, that in the past three days I have had more down-time than in the past six months... man has it been great!

much ado about nothing

There seems to be a good change that Wayne Gretzky's wife of 18 years, Janet Jones, has placed over $500,000 in bets on sporting events (read about it here). Who cares! As far as anyone knows she didn't place any bets on NHL play, and there is no evidence that Wayne placed any kinds of bets himself.

Some people are calling for Gretzky to stay away from Turin, in light of this controversy. I say we stop making life difficult for one of the greatest ambassadors we have in all of Canadian sport and stop trying to engineer controversy where there is none to be found.

the new wheels

It has been a long time since my last post. I will try and keep things a bit more regular in the next little while... anonymous asked about our new car, so here is a picture:

It is a Dodge SX 2.0 with a 5 - speed manual transmission and all the bells & whistles. It is a peppy little car and a lot of fun to drive. This is a huge blessing for us, and obviously we are very thankful to Wesla's dad for hooking us up.
