new addition to the family

Wesla and I have been talking about getting a pet for sometime, we finally decided upon getting some fish. The new place we moved into is already home to a small pooch, named Tara, so that ruled out getting a dog. Wesla's allergy to cats, in combination to my disdain for felines pretty much rules out the possibility that we will ever get a cat (at least one that will live in the house). Wesla cannot stand anything that "scurries", because they are too reminiscent of mice. So that leaves us with the possibility of getting some fish.

We set up or aquarium a week ago, and let it run for a week without any fish in order to filter out all the chlorine and such. On Saturday we added two small Zebra Danios, I only could pick out one in the picture. It was recommended that we only add a couple of small inexpensive fish to start with, because the fish tank needs to develop some more of the beneficial bacteria for an aquatic ecosystem before we add some more fish.

dan's in germany - danindeutschland

This post is long overdue. Let me introduce you to Dan, I met him last year at the U of L, he is a great guy, and he has a new blog that I want to plug. It is appropriately called danindeutschland as he is spending this next year studying at a university in Germany.

Anyway, give his site a look-see, his witty posts are sure to be worth a laugh.

juror duty

I received a letter in the mail today that made me more than a little apprehensive. It bore the title "Department of Justice" in a small - yet remarkably intimidating - font. It is not as though I have committed any recent crimes that would put in in fear of prosecution, tell me, why then was I afraid to open the envelope?

It turns out that I am not the "bad guy" that the Crown prosecutor has it out for, but rather, some other guy who is going to be tried by a jury of his peers. The jury selection summons requires prospective jurors to respond within five days or face the consequence of a fine, jail time, or both. Needless to say my response is already in the mail.

I quickly looked through all the factors that would exclude me from eligibility to serve on a jury; unfortunately, I don't think my psychosis qualifies as a genuine mental infirmity that renders me incapable of the duties of a juror. Is it possible that I could use conscious or religious vows as an excuse to preclude my service? Not really. So all I could do was check the box that states that "I wish to be exempt from serving as a juror because: bla, bla, student, bla, bla, don't have time, bla." We'll see if that cuts the mustard

the move

My blogging has been extremely sparse of late, there are many reasons for that, but I will spare you the gratuitous details.

One of the biggest changes in the last few weeks has been our move within the city of Lethbridge. We were living in the family townhouse section of the U of L campus last year, which is on the West side of Lethbridge; now we are residing on the south side. One of the biggest reasons for making a move was to try and save some money on the rent, and we were also looking for something with a little bit more space. Our new place meets all the desired criteria. Two additional added bonuses include a dishwasher and in house laundry (these are luxuries that I am so thankful for).

We also have a new telephone number, if you are wanting it just drop me an email and I will hook you up.
